Thank You for Your Attention

Concerned about CRIME! He is ready to lead. You know WHO! TRUMP’s been leading us the wrong way since the CENTRAL PARK 5! Such a strong response. But, those five boys WEREN’T GUILTY.

In 1989, SOME PEOPLE SAID that WE HAD TO DO SOMETHING. And so Trump took out that DEATH PENALTY AD against those innocent boys. And some people believed him. Like they do now. DON’T you BELIEVE IT!

WOKE crime. He’s on it now. National guards coming to a city near you, especially a low-life DEMOCRATic city. The crime rate will drop if PEOPLE stay inside all SCARED!

  1. This is a little unfair, Monica. I wish you would go back to your beautiful writing and leave the political stuff alone. Trump is an absolute boor but to be blind to anything he might do that is good is to also do a lot of bad in the world. The one instance of the central park 5 is a terrible one. But I think the number of innocent people who are paying for crimes they didn’t commit is a lot smaller than the number of people out on the streets after multiple violent offences who kill again, and again, and again. Your argument i snot in the least rational and seems to be completely motivated by Trump hatred instead of thinking about how to fix some of the seriously bad problems that are plaguing our nation today.

    1. Thanks for the comment. I agree that Trump has made positive contributions. The Gaza peace accord is promising. I’m glad to see the NIH is funding promising scientific research. Even Trump’s ham-handed triangulation that has pressured Europe into devoting more money to defense is welcome. Certainly the on-again-off-again relationship with Ukraine is something to celebrate compared to what preceded it. I meant “Thanks for Your Attention” to be satirical, but I guess it didn’t land that way. I agree, it was boorish.
I also agree that crime is a problem. But a war with federal troops? War is not the answer. Peaceful protesters are not criminals. Students here on educational visas are not the enemy simply because they promote a free Palestine. Democrat run cities and states are not more lawless than Republican run cities and states. Crime exists across the country without regard for politics.
As he was when he took out that ad calling for the death penalty against the Central Park 5, one of whom now represents District 9 on the NYC City Council, Trump is wrong about crime. Perhaps he is simply misinformed. Perhaps the narrative of out-of-control Democrat-led cities furthers his agenda. Whatever it is, crime is not a problem that can be addressed by an army. The money spent on National Guard deployments would be better spent on building housing, funding retraining programs for the unemployed, providing adequate mental health treatment, training and funding police, and developing common sense models for various community groups to work with police to decrease crime. And for a builder like Trump, I would think that at least building infrastructure would appeal to him. But maybe infrastructure is a sore spot for him because of what happened in his first term.
Certainly part of the problem is the lack of civility in the media space. Trump did talk about infrastructure in 2016, but it became a punchline in the press because it didn’t happen fast enough. Perhaps quick and dirty has become his mantra. Building takes time; demolition can be quick. I read the Economist and The Atlantic- liberal, thoughtful sources. I think they’re pretty even-handed about Trump, but I notice that it’s harder for them to find positives these days.
This is about 400 words. Maybe that’s the minimum word count for expressing a thoughtful political point of view. Thanks for starting a discussion.
